Join us for a conversation about the creation of “Unorthodox” between writer/producer Anna Winger and lead actor Shira Haas moderated by TIOH member Marta Kauffman. Their 45-minute conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A.
Shot in Yiddish and English, the German-American drama mini-series inspired by Deborah Feldman’s bestseller of the same name tells the story of a young woman from the Hasidic community in Williamsburg, Brooklyn who breaks out of her arranged marriage and travels to Berlin to find herself. But just as she discovers a whole new world, the past catches up with her.
Anna Winger is a British-American writer, producer, and creator of the television shows Unorthodox and Deutschland83, and founder of Studio Airlift, a production company in Berlin. Winger was raised in Kenya, Massachusetts, and Mexico. She studied at Columbia University in New York. She has received Emmy, Peabody, and Adolf Grimme awards for her work.
Shira Haas is an Israeli actor. She initially gained national prominence for her roles in Israeli drama films and television (Shtisel, HaMenatzeah, Harem) before gaining international praise for her performance in Unorthodox. Haas has already won one Israeli Academy Award and also the Tribeca Film Festival Award for Best International Actress in 2020.
